The Canadian Maple Leaf Silver Coin

The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Bullion Coin was launched by the Royal Canadian Mint for the first time in 1988 and has since been issued annually. Containing one ounce of 99.99% fine silver, the Silver Maple Leaf is the purest silver coin struck by a government mint anywhere in the world. As a result, it has huge attraction worldwide as an investable coin and is saleable at market value virtually anywhere because of its acknowledged purity and quality.

The instantly recognisable single maple leaf, the national symbol of Canada, adorns the reverse (rear) of this beautiful coin while the obverse (front) bears the head of Queen Elizabeth II. This coin is often the first choice of discriminating collectors and investors not only because of its purity, but also because of the beauty and high quality strike necessary to meet the standards of The Royal Canadian Mint. For all these reasons your portfolio would benefit from these attractive and practical coins.

Coin detail

The original portrait of Queen Elizabeth on the obverse was designed by the artist Arnold Machin and has only changed as Her Majesty has aged. The coin is inscribed with “ELIZABETH II”, the face value (“5 DOLLARS”) and the minting year, "2015". The top of the coin on the reverse side is inscribed, “CANADA”, to represent the issuing country and two other inscriptions in English and French – because Canada is officially bilingual – read “9999 FINE SILVER” and “1 OZ ARGENT PUR 9999”.

How do I know your Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coins are authentic?

In short, because of Royal Canadian Mint Quality Assurance. Historically, Maple Leaf coins have been difficult to counterfeit because they are minted to precise dimensions and weights. In 2013, the RCM added a visual security feature in order to further increase the security of the coin. Innovative use of laser technology is demonstrated by an intricate micro-engraved design of the maple leaf on the reverse. The year of issue is also indicated in the centre of this design by two digits, "15" for 2015. You can see this on all the Maple Leaf coins we sell.

The Silver American Eagle Coin

Silver American Eagles, which the United States government first introduced in 1986, have fast become one of the most popular ways to invest in silver bullion. Like the gold American Eagle, the design for the silver American Eagle was borrowed from an older American coin. The image of "Walking Liberty," located on the front of the silver American Eagle, first debuted in 1916 on the half-dollar coin designed by Adolph Weinman.

The reverse (back), designed by John Mercanti, depicts a heraldic eagle with shield carrying an olive branch and arrows in its talons. An inverse pyramid of thirteen stars representing the thirteen original colonies floats above its head.

The words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA ' 1 OZ. FINE SILVER ~ ONE DOLLAR '" encircle the eagle. Silver American Eagles are one-ounce coins made from 99.9% pure silver bullion. A trace amount of copper is added to increase their durability.

Silver American Eagles maintain a unique advantage over most other silver bullion coins - the U.S. government guarantees their content, weight and purity. Thus, when you pay for a silver American Eagle, you know exactly what you will receive.

The Mexican Libertad Silver Coin

The coins are .999 fine silver. On one side of the coin is a Winged Victoria of the Mexican Independence Victory Column in front of a landscape with the volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccihuatl. The opposite side shows the coat of arms of Mexico surrounded by the historical Mexican coats of arms. The original design is based on the Centenario gold Mexican coin.

Unlike many other silver coins that are legal tender, the Libertad does not have a defined nominal value (such as C$5 for the Maple Leaf, or US$1 for the American Eagle). Instead, it has full legal tender status in Mexico but with a 'free-float' value, meaning it can be converted into Pesos at the current rate of exchange, allowing for a commission fee for connversion. In practice, along with all desirable fine silver coins, its true market value is above the spot price of silver.

While the Libertad does not enjoy the same level of international liquidity as the Maple Leaf, it is still an easily-traded and highly attractive coin, which means that, ounce for ounce, it typically trades at a higher value than the Maple Leaf.
